What are the best life insurance options for military spouses?

As a military spouse, you are entitled to military spouse benefits, including access to affordable life insurance.

There are two main ways to get life insurance as a military spouse: purchasing a private insurance policy or getting a spousal policy through the VA’s Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance plan (FSGLI).

Who offers the most affordable life insurance for military spouses?

Far and away, FSGLI life insurance policies are more affordable than private life insurance policies.

Let’s take a quick look at three life insurance quotes for military spouses from three different providers, Haven Life, Mutual of Omaha, and SGLI.

As you can see, while Mutual of Omaha and Haven Life offer great rates, they are nowhere near as affordable as an SGLI spousal policy.

Choosing between private vs. FSGLI policies

Both private and group life insurance plans have their benefits. Let’s start with private policies.

Private policies are available everywhere. They are tied directly to you as the spouse and move with you from job to job, not tied to anything except your ability to pay the monthly rates to keep them active.

Private policies are also more customizable. You can get term or whole life policies, attach riders to fit your unique needs, and have variable benefits.

Group life insurance policies like FSGLI have the benefit of being very affordable.

In fact, it isn’t easy to find any life insurance policies that will offer you rates anywhere close to what you can get an FSGLI policy for monthly.

Because the VA acts as the life insurance company for military spouses with this policy, monthly premiums are taken directly from the servicemember’s paycheck, making this policy easy to maintain.

However, unlike when you buy life insurance for military spouses from a private insurer, FSGLI policies are tied directly to the servicemember’s employment with the military.

If your spouse leaves the military, or should you divorce, you only have 120 days to relocate your policy to another provider. This relocation does not mean that you will maintain your rates.

FSGLI policies are also not customizable. Your policy is a term life insurance policy with no riders or add-ons.

In the end, the decision between private or group life insurance comes down to what you feel would work best for you and your family.

It is also important to remember to compare multiple quotes from numerous companies before making your final decision.
